The Martyrdom of a Republican Apologist
Never did I feel more of a disconnect from my generation than Election Night 2008. Although I cannot take complete credit for the verbalization of this feeling, I certainly experienced it as I watched Barack Obama’s victory speech that evening. The election of a man who did not support the troops during wartime until necessitated by political convenience was the severest of insults my country could have bestowed upon me. If superb oratorical abilities was the greatest indicator of a man’s qualification for Presidency, then surely Obama would be the just victor.
But in a 21st-century world where the occupational attributes of a President include intestinal fortitude, courage, bravery, and unilateralism when surrounded by cowards, Obama would be suited only as a pauper.
It is true, Obama’s triumph was the result of conditions created by George W. Bush. No, this is not the result of visceral hate and discontent towards Bush, nor the perception of Republican incompetence amongst Americans. It is also not the result of excessive wisdom possessed by McCain. The election of Obama can be best attributed to the bubble of complacency surrounding the United States due to President Bush’s actions that have prevented a terrorist attack on the United States.
Taking no action, but criticizing the acts of others, is the easiest and frequently traveled path by liberal Democrats. Republicans cannot blame Obama for taking the road trail blazed by those before him, nor can they expect him to diverge from this course. Obama and his followers hope if they ignore our enemies, they will disappear. Those who have fought the enemy, know they lay in wait. They are patient and completely committed to their cause. They possess the stomach for the fight, and will do whatever necessary to ensure complete and total victory. For many Americans, this is difficult to hear. But let there be no mistake, the election of Obama and Bush’s retreat to Crawford does not conclude this chapter of terrorist action. It only begins anew.
I know I am not alone in my beliefs regarding Obama, but am one of the millions. While even I will pause today to recognize the historical importance of this moment, I will never discard my conservative values of country before self, fiscal responsibility, pro-life, and the rights of the individual.
