Senator McCain to Assist Military Retention

John McCain has voiced his disapproval over the proposed new Veterans GI Bill sponsered by Senator James Webb. McCain believes that military retention would suffer due to a large number of personnel leaving to pursue educational goals. There are several groups of people that join the military for any number of reasons. Some join specifically for educational benefits and will leave the service at the end of their first enlistment and pursue those educational goals. Others seperate from the military because they just don’t like it and will not pursue further education. Still others enjoy the military and make a career of it. That small percentage of people that will leave to take advantage of a new GI Bill will not significantly impact retention. Who’s to say these individuals will not return to the military better educated and more effective leaders after obtaining a college degree. Now the possibility exists where our military personnel may have to once again bear the brunt of a benefit cut, this time due to a perceived notion that military retention will suffer. Does this mean, that as Commander-in-Chief, John McCain will be micromanaging military retention teams?
